How to get to the Komaba Campus

A general direction of how to get to the University of Tokyo at Komaba is given here.

For most of you staying in the Shibuya area, the first thing is to get to the Shibuya station. Then take Inokashira Line, but do not get on the express train; only the local train stops at Komaba-Todaimae, which is the second stop from Shibuya. It takes only 4-5 minutes. "Todai" is abbreviation of "Tokyo Daigaku" which is University of Tokyo.

The panel indicating departing trains at the entrance gate of Inokashira Line looks like this. It alternates between English and Japanese at regular intervals.

At Komaba-Todaimae station, please use the exit closer to Shibuya (i.e. if you come from Shibuya, the exit near the tail of the train is more convenient).

WARNING: Morning in Shibuya is aberrantly crowded. Especially the tail of the train on the Inokashira platform is. It might be sometimes wiser to move forward on the platform to find a less crowded zone.

The University of Tokyo Komaba Campus is actually within walking distance from Shibuya (ca. 20 minutes). It might be interesting to take a stroll down the Shibuya street with its unusual glitter to get to the campus.

TAKING A TAXI: Generally, taxi drivers in Tokyo do not speak English. Many of them are polite, but some drivers seriously lack knowledge of local streets. Below is the address of the University of Tokyo Komaba Campus, which you might show to the driver.

How to get to the Shibuya area

The following links may be useful for moving around in Tokyo.

From Narita to Shibuya

If you're arriving in Narita, you can either take a shuttle bus (Airport Limousine) which stops at major hotels in downtown Tokyo, or take an express train NEX (Narita Express) which brings you to major stations of JR (Japan Railway). Either way, you can arrive in Shibuya without a transfer.

Information on shuttle bus (Airport Limousine) can be found here. If the bus stops at or near the hotel you will be staying, you may find this option convenient.

Information on NEX can be found here. All seats are reserved seats. You can buy a ticket at a NEX counter while you are in the airport.

A tip: Shibuya station is a maze, not only because it is the hub of many railway lines, but because there are huge construction works going on literally every corner of the station. Very often guests coming from Narita by NEX to Shibuya get lost. One of the reasons is that the exit from the platform of NEX, "New South Gate" takes you to the fringe of Shibuya area. Unless your hotel is in that area, you should walk on the platform nearly to the end (in the same direction as your NEX ran) and use the connection gate ("Central Gate"). Then you can transfer to any line or start your walk from the heart of Shibuya.

From Haneda to Shibuya

If you're arriving in Haneda, you can either take a shuttle bus which stops at major hotels in downtown Tokyo, or take Keikyu line. In the latter case, take a line which goes to Shinagawa (NOT Kawasaki / Yokohama), from which you can transfer to JR Yamanote line (the big ring) and go to any major town in central Tokyo, including Shibuya.

Information on shuttle bus can be found here. If the bus stops at or near the hotel you will be staying, you may find this option convenient.

Information on Keikyu line can be found here. All trains, local, rapid, express, etc. will stop at Shinagawa.
